Sage smudging kits are increasingly popular and an excellent way to start this ancient ritual. A smudge stick consists of dried sage leaves which are lit on fire and allowed to burn until producing fragrant smoke.
As the practice of smudging grows increasingly popular, it’s essential that it be performed with respect and without cultural appropriation in mind. Here are a few suggestions to do just that.
White Sage
Garden Sage is an aromatic classic garden variety, often associated with dispersing negative energy, improving mood and increasing intuition. Studies have also demonstrated its effectiveness for improving sleep and soothing anxiety.
Use it to purify a space, yourself or specific objects. Some sources advise leaving windows open prior to, during and after cleansing to allow impurities to escape through the smoke.
White sage can be used for smudging. Simply light one end and allow it to slowly smolder; once its tips start glowing slightly, start wafting smoke around yourself and your surroundings with care to avoid inhaling any of it. After using, extinguish by pressing its tip against a fireproof container (such as sand) until finished; never use water as this could set fire to its leaves!
Palo Santo
Palo santo wood may not be as widely-known for space clearing purposes as sage is; however, many may prefer its more aromatic scent and believe it to possess similar purifying powers while offering additional perks.
Palo santo wood emits a white smoke when burned, which can be wafted around like incense to clear a room of negative energy. Furthermore, palo santo oil may be inhaled directly or added to water in order to clear your mind and soothe your body; its essential oil may even provide relief for stomachaches!
Correct palo santo smudging follows similar steps as using sage: Light one end of a stick briefly before allowing it to burn down to an ember and guide its smoke towards each corner of the room and direction on your compass. Remember to state your intention throughout this ritual to maximize the power of wood spirits’ cleansing powers to purify yourself and your environment.
