There is no clear-cut route when it comes to creating a wellness routine. Everyone has different needs, and ultimately, everyone’s journey is going to be different. One method that’s been on our radar is crystal therapy. Now I’ve heard of using crystals for love or positivity, but I’ve never heard of crystal therapy for overall wellness. That was until life & wellness coach Koya Webb posted a video recently showcasing the multiple benefits of crystal therapy.

Wellness Starts From Within

Koya has been working with crystals for over a decade, and she said that crystals have brought “healing and nurturing energy” into her life. Koya is no stranger to sharing the methods that have helped her with her wellness routine. Just recently, she was a speaker at Black Love’s 2nd YOU Retreat, where she spoke about mental health and spirituality.

From the video, the benefits of crystals seem to range from enhancing focus and concentration to alleviating anxiety and depression. But as a novice to this crystal therapy world, I wanted to know how they work and how you’re supposed to use them. Since Koya is a crystal aficionado, she’s a great resource on starting that journey.

When asked how she got into using crystals, Koya credits her mom for showing her how nature can be healing. She said, “I was inspired to start using crystals for my daily well-being after I realized the healing power of bringing nature unto the home. This started as a young girl noticing how my Mom cared for her plants and how good I felt when I watered them and wiped down the leaves. Then, I started seeing the Himalayan sea salt lamps in people’s homes and at church, so I bought one and could definitely feel the energy shift in my bedroom.”

Koya went on to say, “So when one of my massage therapists gave me crystals to hold after she massaged my upper body and recommended I do crystal therapy to balance my nervous system, I dived right in.” Koya was open to the power of nature, and when crystals were introduced to her, she had no hesitations about it. That’s a part of exploring with them, you should be open to the possibility of nature having healing aspects. It seems like it’s no different than drinking tea with honey when you feel a cold coming on. Crystals can aid in spiritual, physical, and mental healing, and it’s up to you to see which crystals you resonate with. There are various ways for them to be used, and Koya let us in on how she uses them. She said,“ I personally use crystals every day. I have them in almost every room in my home. I place small crystals in my plants, and I bathe and meditate with them.”

There’s also been some research on how it’s possible crystals can affect your body. In the 1970’s, there was an IBM researcher who coined the phrase “vibrational medicine,” and it referred to “the belief that crystal healing alters the vibration of the body’s molecules to match the vibrational energy of whatever crystal is being used.” Crystals can pretty much be used as a form of alternative medicine, and a lot of the time it can go hand in hand with mindfulness and yoga practices.

So if you are wondering how to start your crystal journey you’ve come to the right place. Koya has broken it down for us, and we can get started in the following ways:

Research and Choose Your Crystals

You’re going to want your crystals to be catered to what you are looking for. So just like anything else that is wellness related, you should spend some time figuring out what you want to gain from the crystals you choose. Koya recommends the book, Crystal Muse: Everyday Rituals to Tune In to the Real You” by Heather Askinosie and Timmi Jandro. The book gives you a practical approach to adding crystals to your daily life.

When Koya was asked how to go about choosing your crystals, she said, “Select a few crystals that resonate with you or that you feel drawn to. It’s important to trust your intuition and choose crystals that feel right for you. I do this by holding crystals up to my heart if they’re small enough or placing my hand on them and closing my eyes to feel their energy.”

It’s good if you’re able to go to a crystal shop to hold and feel the energy and see if you’re drawn to them. If you want a starting point, you could reference the benefits that Koya listed in her Instagram post and find crystals that way. Here are some crystals to start with for a couple of those benefits:

Promotes relaxation and reduces stress: Try amethyst, black tourmaline, or howlite

Now again, these are just some crystal suggestions, but once you decide on what crystals to start with, it’s important to know what to do with them.

Cleanse, Charge, and Set Intentions with Your Crystals

When you first purchase your crystals, you’re going to want to cleanse them of any negative energy that they could’ve had. You want your crystals to only have your energy and for them to essentially start fresh with you. Koya tells us that, “This can be done by holding them under running water or smudging them with sage or palo santo. Once cleansed, you can charge your crystals by placing them in sunlight or moonlight or by using a crystal singing bowl.”

After cleansing and charging the crystals, this is the time to set your intentions for them. Whatever your intentions are is totally up to you. Some common uses are for spiritual growth, protection, or healing. In order to set your intentions, Koya recommends that you “Focus your attention on your intention as you work with your crystals. Using your crystals during meditation or prayer is a great place to start.”

Putting Your Crystals to Use

The biggest thing when it comes to crystals is that they can be used in multiple ways. As mentioned, you can start by using them during meditation or prayer. Koya also tells us, “You can wear them as jewelry, carry them in a pocket or purse, or place them on your body during meditation or a bath. Experiment with different methods to find what works best for you. Regular practice can help you connect more deeply with the healing energy of crystals.”

Crystals are definitely a more holistic approach to wellness, and trusting your intuition seems to be a big part of the practice. But overall, being more in tune with yourself and your needs is always going to be a positive thing. But now that you know the basics of crystal therapy, do you think you’ll be giving it a try?
